Learning Today…Leading Tomorrow
The key principles behind our curriculum design are for our children to be: - Confident and independent; displaying a thirst for learning - Cooperative and resilient; showing team spirit and personal strength in the face of challenge - Caring and respectful; showing empathy and compassion while valuing diversity - Culturally knowledgeable about our country and our world - Achieve academically across the entire curriculum, meeting at least the national expectation by the end of their primary education - Be well prepared for the challenges of the secondary school curriculum - Have aspirations for the future and know that these can be reached through hard work and determination
Our curriculum is driven by our academy motto ‘Learning Today…Leading Tomorrow’ so that all learners are able to experience opportunities that meet their needs and that challenge them to reach their potential, whilst promoting a love of lifelong learning in a safe and stimulating environment.
With every child in mind, our broad and balanced intended curriculum has been designed to be:
- Purposeful and progressive
A skilfully chosen and sequenced curriculum, allows our children to make connections, embed and explore in greater depth the skills and knowledge they have been taught in equal measure. Across the curriculum, the acquisition of skills and knowledge is progressively built upon to ensure they are reinforced, developed in a range of contexts, retained in the long-term memory and used effectively so that they continually know more, remember more and do more. Hand in hand with a strong focus on the cultural capital remaining tailored to their relevant needs, our pupils are equipped to lead a successful, happy, well-rounded life during each stage at Abbey View and in their future endeavours.
- Immersive and inspiring
Placing the child at the centre of our curriculum decisions, we aim to capitalise on their interests and provide experiences beyond the classroom that not only enrich learning but also develop pupils' sense of character and well-being. Rich and vibrant subject planning and learning environments are used as a stimulus to enhance the children’s senses. This gives life to exciting experiences, such as outdoor learning, forest school, external visitors, trips and themed days and weeks. Meaningful links are made with our local environment and local history so that pupils appreciate and respect the community they live in. All of this allows our learners to be fully engaged and motivated and therefore best placed to always move forward in their learning.
- Ambitious and challenging
Built on the knowledge and understanding of our pupils’ and their needs, regardless of starting point, all of our children will gain relevant skills and knowledge that will enable them to thrive in their academic and personal success within the academy and in the wider world.
Abbey View’s core values are central to our unique curriculum. We believe that a strong moral code will empower all our children to be effective learners, good citizens and develop a sense of wellbeing and this is encouraged in all aspects of school life.
Aspiration: We implement a challenging curriculum design which ensures that children are given opportunities to aim high, regardless of their starting point as they learn and lead with independence and collaboration.
Respect: Children are encouraged to be mindful of valuing the range of opportunities they are given to respectfully learn and lead while building relationships within their academy journey, ensuring they are well prepared for the next stage of education and life in their community.
Determination: Pupils are taught to stay in control with a personal growth mindset and in doing so remain motivated on their goals. When faced with adversity or challenge, they are encouraged to be resolute and believe they can achieve what they set out to do – a skill which drives increased success in the classroom and beyond.
Teamwork: Inside or outside the classroom, the fundamental skills associated with working as a collective unit towards a common goal are harnessed through our curriculum. Our pupils develop as strong communicators with active listening and effective articulation. Through teamwork, they build self confidence and a sense of responsibility towards themselves and others.
Alongside our values, at AVPA, we ‘Create Excellent Learners (CEL)’ and throughout the curriculum pupils are taught and given opportunities to develop characteristics known as the ‘5Rs’: resilience, resourcefulness, relationships, reflectiveness and risk-taking. Through the 5R’s children develop enquiring minds, a growth mindset and the ability to self-regulate.
Core British values and the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils, and their understanding of the values of our society are woven through our curriculum. This ensures that pupils understand their rights and responsibilities, as well as the roles of law and democracy that they need in life now and in the future so that they can flourish and succeed in an ever-changing world.
In essence, the focus we place through our curriculum on our core values, the 5Rs and British values ensures that our children acquire the relevant skills, attitudes and knowledge to thoroughly enjoy their primary education and fully prepare them for secondary school and adult life.
All at Abbey View are committed to delivering this intended curriculum in order to provide a memorable and successful primary education for each and every child.
