English as an Additional Language (EAL)
At Abbey View Primary School inclusion means everyone can achieve, thrive and belong - LEARNING TODAY…LEADING TOMORROW
At Abbey View Primary Academy we value and celebrate linguistic diversity. We aim to ensure pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL) achieve, thrive and belong. Our EAL provision supports pupils to access the full curriculum while developing their spoken and written English.
On admission we ask parents/carers to complete our home-language information so we can identify pupils with EAL. New arrivals are assessed on entry to establish English language proficiency and any immediate support needs. Assessments are non-stigmatising and used to plan next steps.
New pupils receive a planned induction which may include language screening, buddying with a peer, a short staged-entry period if required, and support materials in key subjects. We provide adapted timetables and additional language-rich sessions for pupils who are at the early stages of English acquisition.
Teaching and the Curriculum
Teachers use evidence-informed approaches to support language development, including adaptative high-quality teaching, oracy, modelling, scaffolding, visual aids, explicitly taught vocabulary, speaking frames and structured talk.
Lessons are planned to balance subject knowledge with language learning, ensuring pupils with EAL can engage with curriculum content. Phonics and early reading approaches are used alongside targeted support for EAL pupils.
We offer a range of provision according to need: in-class support from teaching assistants, small-group targeted work, 1:1 support where necessary, and catch-up programmes. Interventions are time-limited, monitored closely and reviewed for impact. Referrals for additional support follow our school processes.
