Mathematics

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

(National Curriculum, DfE)

Mathematics is important in everyday life and the world of work, so with this is mind, at AVPA we aim to develop pupils’ mathematical fluency, provide them with the ability to solve problems, reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately.  All pupils are challenged and encouraged to excel in Maths whilst finding enjoyment in the subject.  Our intention is to foster a love of Maths which will see children develop in the subject throughout their primary education and beyond.

Our Maths curriculum has been designed with the support of other academies in the IFPT, White Rose Maths, Master the Curriculum and the local Maths hub to guide the progression in children’s mathematical understanding. We follow a mastery, small steps approach which enables pupils to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts as well as thrive in confidence and competence before moving on. The majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at the same pace. Those pupils, who need more help with developing their mathematical fluency, will be offered support to consolidate their understanding and have intervention support, and still be exposed to reasoning and problem solving.

New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all pupils to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics and allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding.

Teachers provide the children with a wide range of opportunities to use maths and develop problem solving and reasoning skills through abstract challenges and investigative tasks. We encourage our children to develop a strong mathematical vocabulary and use talk as an effective tool for learning and understanding.  At Abbey View, we are invested in helping our pupils develop maths skills for life, as well as supporting them to learn today so that they can lead tomorrow in critical fields that require Maths.
