Pupil Premium

The pupil premium grant, introduced in 2011, is funding to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged 5-16-year-olds in state-funded schools in England; all of the academies within IFPT are state funded.

IFPT understands that our communities are still recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and are now facing a cost of living crisis. We are very concerned that in England the primary school attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers grew between 2019 and 2022, having narrowed over the previous 8 years. This is mirrored by the first part of our Trust’s vision:

“For all our children to be inspired by an excellent education that raises their ambitions and enriches their lives.”

In this context, we (IFPT) feel it is more important than ever that our academies use this additional funding to secure maximum educational impact from their use of the pupil premium grant. The Department for Education make it clear that the Pupil Premium Grant is not a personal budget for individual pupils and academies/schools do not have to spend pupil premium grant so that it solely benefits pupils who meet the funding criteria. Pupil premium can be used to support other pupils with identified needs, or used for whole class interventions that will benefit all pupils.

Our (IFPT) priorities for the effective use of Pupil Premium Grant mirror exactly those of the Department for Education (DfE)and the recommendations from the DfE endorsed Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and we strongly encourage all of our academies to use this grant to focus upon:

  • Supporting high-quality teaching of English (reading and writing) and maths
  • Targeted tutoring support (Tutoring is intensive one to one or small group academic support, delivered in regular sessions over a period of time, by a teaching professional. Tutoring is an effective and well-evidenced targeted approach to increase the attainment of disadvantaged pupils.)
  • Attendance strategies to secure excellent pupil attendance for our children’s wellbeing, safety and long-term development.

Our academies understand the needs of the communities they serve and are responsible for deciding how they will use their Pupil Premium Grant to effectively support the needs they have identified. We (IFPT) quality assure all Pupil Premium Strategies and our academy leaders expect to be challenged if
the priorities for the Pupil Premium Grant, as explained above, are not focused upon.

At Abbey View Primary Academy we have high aspirations of everyone and we believe that, regardless of starting point, everyone should aim high and dream big. Disadvantage of any kind should never be a barrier to learning and achievement and the pupil premium grant allocates additional funding to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils. The academy will use the grant to support this group, which comprise of pupils with a range of different abilities, to narrow any achievement gaps between them and their peers. We recognise that not all pupils eligible for pupil premium funding will have lower attainment than their peers. In such cases, the grant will be used to help improve pupils’ progress and attainment so that they can reach their potential.
