Science

A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
(National Curriculum, DfE)
Our Science curriculum is rooted in the core sciences of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as identified in the National Curriculum. It has been designed to ensure there is progression in the sequence of knowledge and concepts so that prior learning is continually built upon. As pupils move through the academy, they become adept at describing processes and key characteristics in common language as well as technical terminology. Cross curricular links are made wherever possible to ensure that skills in maths, for example, are being applied where relevant to do so.
Pupils in Key Stage One have a weekly science lesson and in Key Stage Two have two Science lessons a week. Opportunities to work scientifically (like a ‘scientist’) are embedded in our curriculum design and, as such, pupils at Abbey View are encouraged to plan and conduct experiments, make predictions, observe, interpret, record and draw conclusions. Our curriculum is enriched with visits and visitors, and special themed weeks, such as British Science Week, raises the profile of the subject across the academy. We aim to develop enquiring minds and introduce pupils to the work of scientists that have gone before. By striving for our pupils to learn today, we endeavour to create the scientific leaders of tomorrow.
